How to Build a Backrest for a Harley
A well crafted backrest adds a level of comfort to any Harley Davidson motorcycle without compromising on style. While you can certainly find a number of backrests on the retail market, building your own backrest will give you a connection to your bike and your comfort that you wouldn't otherwise get. Take measurements. You need to measure the width of your seat and estimate the height for the backrest. Also, take note of any metal straps underneath the seat that can be used to anchor the backrest's stays.
- 2
Create the frame. On the basis of your measurements, create an upside-down U-shape of steel tubing to serve as the frame of the backrest. Drill two holes into each side of the U-frame.
- 3
Add a plate to give the backrest strength and a place to anchor it to the Harley. It should be approximately six inches tall across the U-frame. Screw and then weld the plate onto the arms of the U-frame. Also, be sure to drill holes into the plate so you can connect it to the bike.
- 4
Create the cushion around the frame. This is probably best done by a professional upholsterer, but if you have experience with upholstery you can give it a try. Leather is the preferred material for its style and physical properties. Fill out the leather with dense foam and consider stitching a zipper into the cushion so you can access parts inside.
- 5
Build the anchor. Create an anchor from two pieces of steel that will connect the backrest's center plate to the Harley. While it depends on the Harley model, the anchor will likely take an L-shape so that it can be screwed to the bottom of the seat.
